I first read his book "Not Tonight, Josephine: A Road Trip Through Small-Town America" with his friend Mark and I was hooked on George's humor and wonderful writing about his adventure. So I next turned to "Free Country" and enjoyed it as much as the first. George is hilarious! I love his dry British humor (which I totally understand having lived there for one year). But most of all -- he and Ben's mission was an unbelievable feat. I can't believe all the obstacles they faced, yet they charged on, always looking to the end of their journey. Loved the stories of the very kind and some quirky people they met on their trip. A must read if you like humorous travel memoirs with a twist!! And if you haven't already, read the "Josephine" book, do it. I am now reading "Travels with Rachael"-review will follow when done. After bingeing on fiction for months, I was in the mood for something real. This was delightful! Two guys (you decide where they fit on the insanity scale) decide to start off in Land's End, Cornell, wearing nothing but their underwear. No shoes, shirts, trousers....and no bikes. Did I mention that their goal was to bicycle to the opposite end of Great Britain....John O'Groats, Scotland? Like, 1000 miles!What ensues is an oft times hilarious account of their journey. Loved the bickering between Ben and George! They were like an old married couple! But what they really learned was that most people are genuinely glad to listen to strangers, and even if they think they're nuts, will help said strangers out with whatever they need. Personally, I'm totally amazed that they pulled the whole thing off. I really didn't think they would. The book is an enjoyable read, and I heartily recommend it!
