Ebook About
This national bestseller chronicles one man’s 650–mile trek on foot from San Diego to San Francisco—sure to appeal to readers of naturalist works like Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire, Paul Thoreau’s On the Plain of Snakes, and Mark Kenyon’s That Wild Country. In 1769, an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá sketched a route that would become, in part, the famous El Camino Real. It laid the foundation for the Golden State we know today, a place that remains as mythical and captivating as any in the world.Despite having grown up in California, Nick Neely realized how little he knew about its history. So he set off to learn it bodily, with just a backpack and a tent, trekking through stretches of California both lonely and urban. For twelve weeks, following the journal of expedition missionary Father Juan Crespí, Neely kept pace with the ghosts of the Portolá expedition—nearly 250 years later.Weaving natural and human history, Alta California relives Neely’s adventure, while telling a story of Native cultures and the Spanish missions that soon devastated them, and exploring the evolution of California and its landscape. The result is a collage of historical and contemporary California, of lyricism and pedestrian serendipity, and of the biggest issues facing California today—water, agriculture, oil and gas, immigration, and development—all of it one step at a time.“Rich in little–known history . . . Up the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county coasts, then inland into the Salinas Valley to Monterey Bay. Somewhere along here, the owl moons and woodpeckers do something you might not have thought possible in 2019: they make you fall, or refall, in love with California, ungrudgingly, wildfires and insane housing prices and all . . . What a journey, you think. What a state." —San Francisco Chronicle

Book Alta California: From San Diego to San Francisco, A Journey on Foot to Rediscover the Golden State Review :

I read Alta California 1769 by Farebrother first, which is a very direct play by play of the original expedition, thinking it’d be a great basis before reading the modern expedition. I should have stopped there. This dude wouldn’t know adventure if it slapped him in the face. This could have been amazing book highlighting all coastal California has to offer; the different cultures, the efforts being made to restore the environment, and people’s willingness to help adventurers. Instead the entire narrative is that people are horrible, it’s your fault for needing shelter, and since you’re here now you’re to blame for capitalism. Urban camping isn’t hard and you’d think someone from California would have more knowledge of things to highlight. Baseball games? A brewery? Ants? You heard a mountain lion? Oh damn! This guy is wild! If the gnarliest part is crossing a train bridge don’t go by that same bridge during the day when the teenagers are mooning the Surf Liner passenger cars. I’ve only given up reading three books in my near 40 years of life, this one was number four.
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this fascinating book from a publishing world friend and thoroughly enjoyed reading about this remarkable adventure. Neely is an astute observer of everything around him-flora, fauna, geology, engineering, architecture, sanity and insanity, etc. And-his research into the history of the Portola Expedition provides a rich backdrop. I was fascinated by his path, his choice of transport besides his feet, how and where he slept, and how he engaged with the curious mix of characters along the way. His ability to take advantage of beauty and freshness while also navigating around various obstacles added an interesting intrigue to his special story. On top of all this he possesses a poet's brilliant command of the language to describe his journey. I love this book and would also like to see it made in a movie (hoping it won't be sensationalized).
